Initiation follows Ruby Carmichael’s journey as she discovers the secrets of her life after a kiss on her crush nearly kills him, and her adoptive parents give her a file revealing the truth of her heritage. Discovering the she’s a Sender, a person who can help the dead cross over into the afterlife, is a lot for Ruby to take in. She’s uprooted from the parents she loves and knows and taken to the School of Exorcists to learn about her ability while also facing her birth parents who aren’t exactly the type of people she wants in her life.
Initiation had me hooked from page one. This book wasn’t your average reaper or ghost story, and O’Connor built a world full of power and magic so believable, I wish I was a Sender, too, well, at least for a day. I love stories about people finding their place in new worlds that they didn’t know about, and this story had just that. A magical world within our world with a great setting to go along with it. The characters were multifaceted, and I can’t wait to learn more about them and to see how the students’ powers progress. The story is a tale of dark versus light magic, and it’ll be interesting what side Ruby and her friends choose.
I liked the story overall, and it was fast-paced, but there were a few things I didn’t like, but it wasn’t enough to change my enjoyment. I didn’t like the instant love aspect of the story with Zander. Without giving too much away, I felt that it was too easy, and it made me suspicious of him the entire time, which had me disappointed when nothing came to fruition with my suspicions. I would have also liked to have seen more done with the action scenes. They went by too quickly, and I thought Ruby, with her power, could have done more. As a Sender who is supposed to be really powerful, she didn’t kick as much butt as I’d have liked. I hope that’ll change as the series continues. I look forward to what is to come.
If you like stories of magic, good versus evil, ghost stories, and themes of self discovery, you’ll enjoy the Initiation. I highly recommend it.
