Altered to Kill Character Bio: Lexie Lumins

Lexie Lumins Altered to Kill Young Adult Book Character Bio

Name: Lexie Lumins

Age: Mid-twenties

Physical Features: Long black hair, blue eyes, petite, 5’4”

Style: Maxi skirts, bold patterns, colorful, full-length dresses, lots of jewelry

Strengths: Matriarch of Luminous Sisterhood, sensibility, independent, empathetic

Weaknesses: Always puts others first, bound by Enchantress Sisterhood law

Quote: “The mind is a powerful thing.” I love this quote because it sums up enchantresses. They understand the mind because their power influences it. They have to know just what to say to get an everlasting effect on someone. Physical commands are easy, but changing the way a person thinks takes a master. It’s why Lexie is the matriarch of her faction of the Enchantress Sisterhood.

Fun Facts:

  • Lexie is responsible for helping Alyssa Callaghan, from the Destined for Dreams series and Escaping Fate, leave the hardships of her life.
  • Lexie has no living biological family.
  • The book she shows Mira with the history of the HPA is one of four in existence. Only the other matriarchs of the sisterhood have a copy except for the Ever Sisterhood, since there isn’t a matriarch. The remaining copy resides with the Creature Council’s enchantress from the Destined for Dreams series.
  • The different factions of the Enchantress Sisterhood are Luminous, Crescent, Midnight, and Ever.

I hope you’ve enjoyed an in-depth look at the amazing enchantress, Lexie Lumins! Sign up for my newsletter to read about Lexie’s first appearance in the creature world that the Destined for Dreams series and the Finding Nate series share.

Altered to Kill Character Bio: Evie Thompson

EVIE THOMPSON

Name: Evie Thompson

Age: 17

Physical features: Dark hair cut into a bob, golden skin, hazel eyes, slim/athletic.

Style: Casual wear, jeans, T-shirts, boots, scrubs within the HPA training facility.

Favorite Activities: Shopping, studying, learning about the creature world.

Fears: Making bad decisions, uncertainty, death, fighting against someone she knows.

Strengths: She’s fast and quick thinking, intelligent, careful, a critical thinker.

Weaknesses: Wishy-washy, anxious, regretful, a follower.

Quotes: “I’m just scared. You know, this whole thing wasn’t what I signed up for. The board told me I’d be safe, that I wouldn’t have to worry anymore because I’d be powerful and able to fight. They lied. I’m more scared than ever.” This is one of my favorite Evie lines because it’s one that rings true to her situation. Her realization speaks volumes to the evolution of her character from what role she played in the Destined for Dreams series.

Fun facts:

  • Evie’s name is four letters like Nate, Mira, and Liam. Like Nate, she goes by a nickname instead of her real name, Evangeline.
  • Evie has more secrets and tells more lies than anyone in the series.
  • Evie both loves and hates Nate’s impulsivity.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this in-depth look into Evie!

Altered to Kill Character Bio: Liam Schultz

Liam Schultz

Name: Liam Schultz

Age: 17

Physical features: Dark hair, dark eyes, tan skin, over six feet, thin and sinewy, facial scruff.

Style: Lots of black clothes, boots, hoodies, occasionally jeans.

Favorite activities: Playing guitar and singing, driving, music, performing at open mic night, song writing.

Fears: Not being strong enough, losing Mira, having his memories rewritten again.

Strengths: Level headed, great critical thinking skills, open-minded, adaptive.

Weaknesses: Being human, easily persuaded

Quotes: “‘Please, stay.’ His face hovers close, and through the shadow, I can see the outline of his eyes… ‘Mira, I know you’re with my best friend. I get that, and I respect that. But, I can’t stop myself from caring about you. I just wanted you to know. You’ve been in my life for so long, and I want to keep it that way. Please, stay with me. Please.’” I love the words Liam tells Mira when she’s recovering from the ceraste venom. He speaks his mind, unsure whether or not she can hear him, and does it because he’s unsure of what happens next. It shows how much he cares for her, even if nothing can happen between them.

Fun facts:

  • The song Liam sings to Mira in the car when she gets hit with a dart is one he wrote specifically for her. He thinks it was after Nate died, but Mira knows immediately that it had to be when she and Nate were still together since Nate never died. She’ll never mention it to him.
  • Liam blames Nate for all of their misadventures, even though it was the HPA’s fault.
  • Mira’s enchantress blood is what sways him in making the decision to help her find Nate.

I hope you’ve enjoyed Liam’s character bio! Do you have anything else you’d like to know? Leave your questions in the comments.

Altered to Kill Character Bio: Mira Everson

mIRA eVERSON

Name: Mira Everson

Age: 17

Physical features: Blue eyes, long, straight black hair, Five and a half feet tall, full lips, delicate nose.

Style: Sundresses and skinny jeans, usually flip-flops, hoodies with anything.

Favorite activities: Watching sunsets, listening to music, shopping.

Favorite bands: Viral Night Walkers and Starlight Savages—both fictional.

Strengths: Feistiness, motivated, doesn’t give up

Weaknesses: Doesn’t recognize her potential, obsessive, overly focused, impulsiveness.

Quote: “I’m on a mission and some weird snake woman is not going to ruin my road trip. I’ve had enough fighting for my life for one week… ‘You better enjoy your last few minutes!’ I chuck a screw driver at her, and it hits her in the chest. She startles and backs up a few feet.” I chose this quote of Mira’s because it perfectly sums up her personality. She’s more likely to get over her fears quickly and gets angry with whoever tries to make her feel weak. It also captures her determination and resourcefulness.

Fun facts:

  • Mira loves music, a variety, but her favorite is indie rock. It was what made it easier to befriend Liam when she started going out with Nate.
  • Mira’s never been sick, not even with a cold. It’s one of the benefits of being an enchantress.
  • Mira’s enchantress bloodline runs with the Ever Sisterhood. Her great, great grandmother never told her son what she was, and he only had a son, and so on. Mira is the first girl born to the Everson’s (the last of the Ever Enchantresses) in decades.

I hope you’ve enjoyed a deeper look into Mira Everson. I can’t wait for you all to watch her morph and change as the series continues. You can pick up a copy of Altered to Kill here.

Altered to Kill Character Bio: Nate Burnham

NATE BURNHAM

Name: Nate Burnham

Age: 17

Physical features: Green eyes, wavy, sometimes curly, blond hair, over six feet tall, lean and muscular.

Style: Beachwear, slip-on shoes, hoodies outside the HPA and then scrubs and jeans within.

Favorite activities: Hanging out at the beach, going to shows, eating, spending time with Mira and Liam.

Fears: Not being in charge of his future, the consequences in his forced actions, uncertainty.

Strengths: Curiosity, appetite for learning, questioning authority.

Weaknesses: Impulsivity, acting before thinking, constantly shifting moral compass.

Quote: “I’ve killed again. I’m officially a serial killer of sorts. I don’t like what I’m becoming, and I don’t know what to do about it.” This is one of my favorite Nate quotes because this is where he realizes he’s starting to change. His awareness of who he is, is what makes him stronger. It also pushes him into realizing what he wants with his future.

Fun facts:

  • In the original Altered to Kill, Nate never killed until he was forced by the Human Preservation Agency. He was originally taken by the HPA for drawing attention to himself in a senior prank gone wrong.
  • He once made Evie the best grilled cheese she’s ever tasted, but the scene was cut.
  • Nate’s name was shortened to have the same amount of letters as Mira’s name.

I hope you’ve enjoyed a more in-depth look at Nate Burnham! You can order your copy of Altered to Kill here.

Altered to Kill Deleted Scene

As I find myself drawing near the end of the edits of the second book of my Finding Nate series, I figured I’d share one of my favorite scenes from the first book, Altered to Kill, that was cut and never made it into the final publication of the novel.

This scene takes place on Mira and Liam’s road trip to find Nate and includes the ghost of Bridgette, a character I had to cut for various reasons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

UNEDITED DELETED SCENE FROM ALTERED TO KILL

 MIRA

I sit in bed, holding a pillow to my chest. My puffy, red eyes burn from crying, and when I think I’m all out of tears, more manage to spill out. The television hums at a low volume, but I’m not watching it while Liam’s in the shower. I know he decided to take one to give me alone time, but I could use a hug.

I wipe my face on the pillow and flip through the photo album I had shoved into the glove compartment of the SUV for safe keeping. Every picture feels so long ago, like something from a history book of my life, and it’s hard to remember what it used to feel like being so happy without clouds constantly hanging over my head.

I stare at the ticket stubs and the picture of Nate, Liam, and me at a rock show after what was supposed to be Nate’s death date. The time-stamped was the proof I was going to show Liam but didn’t need to because the doctors were enough proof.

I lean back and stare at the ceiling. I count each breath, finding the will to calm down. I’m so depressed. I want to give up, curl into a ball under the blankets, and stay here forever. I’m homesick more than ever, and my heart hurts every time I remember I can’t go back.

A cool breeze plays with my hair, and I jerk up, startled. None of the windows are open and the AC unit isn’t on. I shiver as cool air slides over me again. Fear swells in my chest, and my heart races. There’s nothing here, but I can’t shake the feeling of being watched. I pull the blanket higher around me and search the room for something not there. I half expect the Boogie Man to jump from the half opened closet, and I grab the remote and turn the television up louder than my thoughts.

It blinks off.

I stare at the remote and hit the power button and set it down next to me. It blinks off again. Panic hammers through my chest, and I slide off the bed. My hands shake as I tiptoe across the room to the bathroom. When my fingers touch the door handle, the remote flies at the wall next to me.

I scream and run into the bathroom. Liam jumps from the shower, and I grab onto him, holding him in front of me like a shield. My hands slip off his wet shoulders, and I pull back, covering my eyes.

“I should’ve knocked,” I say, feeling behind me for the towel hanging above the toilet. My fear morphs into embarrassment, and I feel like running back into the room. It’s less mortifying out there.

“I’m covered,” he says. I glance at him through my fingers as he peeks into the room. “What’s wrong?”

I release a breath and stare at the floor. “Something weird happened.”

“You’re shaking.”

“It scared me to death. First the TV kept going off and then a remote flew at the wall. I think this place is haunted.”

Liam searches my face, and I can’t help but look at his bare chest. It’s very distracting, but I feel a lot better now. My heart isn’t pounding from fright anymore. It’s pounding harder because, well, it can’t help it.

“Maybe it was something electrical,” Liam suggests.

I reluctantly bring my eyes to his. “You don’t believe me.”

He sighs, rubbing his wet hair with his fingers. “It’s not that. A little TV flickering has never harmed anyone.”

Every single horror movie I’ve ever watched plays in my mind. “Are you crazy? TV flickering means we are going to die in here. It’s the perfect place. No one knows we’re here. People think I’m already dead. The TV flickering is taking advantage of me, and whatever is causing it is out to get me.”

He has the nerve to laugh. “I think you’re over thinking this entire situ—” Liam’s eyes widen and he freezes. By the look on his face, I know something horrifying is behind me.

My heart is going to explode. It can’t take this anymore. “You’re really scaring me.”

He offers his hand out to me and I take it. He pulls me to him, and I turn to look behind me. Nothing’s there, and I let out a giant breath. “Don’t mess with me. That wasn’t cool.” I push him back a little.

He frowns and doesn’t meet my eyes. “Look at the mirror.”

I turn away from him and shift my eyes to the mirror. My heart falls into my stomach when I see it. I compose myself even though I want to knock Liam out of the way and run out of the room. I step closer to the mirror instead. Traced into the steam is a word no one wants to see.

DIE.

I tap Liam’s shoulder and nudge him back so I can get out of here. He cups my chin instead of moving and turns me back to the mirror. A new line is forming and whatever is making it has more to say.

My eyes trace each letter as they form. H-I-D-E. “You want me to hide? Where? Who are you? Leo?”

N-O. The ghost is getting faster, but it’s not writing anything close to a novel and isn’t giving me the answers I want. B-R-I-D-G-E. What is that supposed to mean? The clues really suck. Am I going to die on a bridge? Or should I hide under one? “I need the map. I want to know what bridges are on the way to Virginia,” I say to Liam.

S-T-O-P. Each letter forms even faster. S-T-A-Y. A-W-A-Y.

Liam walks up to the mirror and inspects each word. “Stay away from Virginia,” he says. It’s weird hearing him talk to the mirror even though I was shooting out questions a second ago. It looks crazier than it feels.

Y-E-S. N-O-T. S-A-F-E.

“But Nate is our only chance. We need his help,” I argue.

C-H-A-N-G-E-D.

“What is that supposed to mean?” I ask.

D-I-E.

D-I-E.

D-I-E.

“Stop it!” I scream. I grab the hand towel and wipe the steam from the mirror. “Leave us alone.”

I fall into Liam and he holds me. He guides me away from the bathroom, and we sit together on the bed. He rests his hand on my knee and puts his arm around my shoulder. I sink into him and smell the fresh scent of his shower.

I twine my fingers through his hand holding my knee. “I’m at a loss.”

“It’ll all work out,” he says.

“How do you know?”

“I don’t. I’m trying to comfort you.”

I can’t help but smile. “Should we keep going?”

He shrugs. “I think so. Let’s try not to let a ghost influence our decision. We don’t even know who it is or if they’re messing with us.”

“You’re right,” I say.

Liam tucks my hair behind my ear. “We can leave now if you want.”

I press my head into his bare shoulder. “No, it’s fine, but you should really get dressed just in case.”

He smiles. “But I’m comfortable.”

I giggle and roll my eyes. Even after everything, Liam can still joke around and make me feel at ease. If only the ghost could’ve minded its own business and left us alone, I wouldn’t have to worry so much. The ghost has to be wrong. No one is going to die, not if I can help it.

Thanks for reading!

Here’s an excerpt:

I’m going to need a lot more than this dish rag and paper towels to clean up the pool of blood seeping from Ryder’s stomach. The puddle smears when I rub it instead of being soaked up like it should be. “Stop bleeding already, man.” I drop the dish towel, splattering blood on my shoes. “Where the heck is the mop?” I don’t know why I even ask. No one will respond.

I wipe my hands on my jeans without thinking. “Oh, come on!” I’m starting to look like a murderer. Hate to break it to you, Nate, but your appearance is the least of your worries. I’m sweaty, have blood all over me, and I’m sure my eyes are wild.

Think, Nate. Think. Think. Think. I growl like a rabid dog. “Why can’t you just go away?” I kick Ryder’s leg. “You piece of crap lunatic!” I kick him again. “You should be the one going to jail. You attacked my girlfriend. You held a knife to her throat. I heard you tell her how she didn’t deserve to live. How you were going to make her feel the pain she made you feel. But guess what? You did that to yourself. You knew she was in love with me. Mira is my girlfriend. Not yours. And if anyone should deserve to live, it’s her.” I kick him so hard his body rolls over.

What the…? No way. Bodies don’t decompose this fast. Part of the skin on Ryder’s arm is blackening. It looks like it’s raw and melting away, yet Ryder has only been dead for just over an hour. I nudge his arm with the toe of my shoe and it deflates. I jerk back in surprise. It’s foul and intriguing. Does Hollywood keep this postmortem fact a secret? I never knew this about dead bodies. At least he doesn’t stink. Actually, he smells rather nice. Like cinnamon rolls. Man, I’m disgusting.

Morticians have a lot of work to make bodies look presentable. If they threw Ryder in a casket now, it’d have to be closed. He’s nasty looking. But dang, his warm pastry smell is overpowering and making me hungry.

I shake my head to regain focus, but I can’t. My stomach growls. Despite Ryder’s disgusting flesh, his scent is mouthwatering, and I almost want take a bite out of him. Almost. Now that’s one way to get rid of the body.

I yank my shirt over my nose. This body cleanup business is ludicrous. I need to put him in a trash bag and somehow manage to get him in the back of my Ford Ranger without anyone seeing me.

I kick the dishrag away. No point in trying to soak up the blood if Ryder isn’t going to stop bleeding and decomposing. The police would never believe this happened just over an hour ago. Maybe that would help my case. I can find an alibi for another day and time. I wonder if anyone would believe I just stumbled upon him. With the way he looks now, only a DNA test could determine who the body belongs to. He’s in your girlfriend’s kitchen. That still leaves her a suspect.

I stumble around the rotting corpse and yank a few black trash bags from under the sink. They’re impossible to unfold with my gooey fingers, and I shake them until they open. With one hand, I yank Ryder’s blood-matted hair until he’s is sitting up. I let go to adjust the bag when he slumps against my chest. The trash bag slips from my fingers, and my shirt yanks down with Ryder’s weight. The cinnamon roll smell smacks me in the face, and I breathe deeply.  “You’re making me so hungry.”

I lean closer and closer. I can’t help it. I can’t do anything to stop myself. I have to taste him. One little bite won’t hurt.

I grab his soft, slimy arm and bring it to my mouth. Don’t do it! This is disgusting. And crazy. And completely not something a normal person would do. Pull it together. Seriously, pull it together! My mind doesn’t want any part of this Ryder tasting, but my hands won’t drop his arm, and my mouth won’t stay shut. I’m really doing this. I’m going to take a bite out of a dead guy.

I hope you enjoy Altered to Kill! You can pre-order a copy on Amazon!
