The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia

img_5351I was so excited to receive an ARC of The Lovely Reckless months before its release, and I devoured it! The novel blew me away! It follows Frankie Devereaux, a teen girl whose boyfriend is brutally beaten to death in front of her, as she gives up her old life of wealth and riches after making a mistake that gets her kicked out of her prep school. Forced to live with her undercover cop father and go to a new school vastly different than her private school, Frankie falls into a world of street racing, fights, and everything that encompasses hot, irresistible bad boy Marco Leone.

thelovelyrecklessBeautifully written, The Lovely Reckless captured the perfect amount of action, love, grief, and self-discovery. It lingered with me for days as I reveled in the love story of Frankie and Marco. It was one of my favorite young adult contemporary romances ever. I just loved the development of Frankie’s character and her growth throughout the novel. I loved how every relationship played a role in who she was and was becoming from her strained relationship between her parents, the forced friendship with her best friends, to the new unexpected relationships in the people she’d have never associated with if she were the same Frankie before the death of her childhood friend and boyfriend.

But the story wasn’t all love and moving forward through grief, it was action-packed and exciting with some mystery. It had all the things I love in a novel. If you enjoy stories about love and loss, are a fan of street racing movies like The Fast and the Furious, like young adult contemporary romance, and novels with diversity, The Lovely Reckless is for you.

Crushed: Demon Within Book Two Prologue

crushed-teaser8In only two short days, Crushed releases into the world! The second book in the series was so much fun to write because I got to explore a few characters that we just glimpsed in Tainted. It’s definitely a rollercoaster ride of a book as Cami finds herself amid a world where she doesn’t know who to trust as secrets of her life come to light. If you like young adult stories that explore the areas between good and evil, characters with special abilities, hot book boyfriends, mystery, and the possibility of some intense feelings, you’ll love Crushed.

To celebrate the soon-to-be release of Crushed, I’ve included the prologue for your reading enjoyment. I hope you love the book as much as I loved writing it!

And now without further ado…

A CRIMSON HAZE shadows my vision as anger rages through me like a fire threatening to burn everything around me to ashes. The bitter, dangerous emotion consuming me keeps me moving forward. It’s the only thing that encourages me to succeed in the one thing I want most in life—the destruction of those who’ve betrayed me by my hands.

I wasn’t always like this. I didn’t always have this overwhelming hunger for death, for devastation. But then everything changed. Everything always changes. My demonic side started controlling me worse than the man who raised me. My father’s obsession with who I should be transformed me from a weak, fragile girl into a blood-thirsty demi-demon. And now it dominates me, controls me. By accepting my heritage as a half-demon, I’ve inherited the evil that comes with it—the evil that forces me to take deep breaths to stay in control.

The evil burns in a good way, my overwhelming power sizzling under my skin. The faces of the Hunter’s Alliance blur as my desire to obliterate them overtakes my soul.

“Calm down,” a surly voice begs. “You’ll only hurt yourself.”

The skin on my wrists stings as I yank at the wired rope binding my hands to the rickety metal chair. My knotted hair falls in my eyes. A scream burns in my throat. I need to get out of here before they discover I’ve lost control of my demon half—before they try to send my soul to where it belongs.

“You have to let me go before it’s too late.” My voice comes out as a whisper like the quiet before a storm. A thundering, demonic storm I know is bound to happen if I can’t force my demonic half to relax.

Icy fear slithers through my veins. No one can save me. I can’t even protect myself. My humanity slowly slips through my fingers. I won’t let the alliance do this to me. I trusted them, helped them, and just like my dad said, they’ve turned their backs on me.

My vision transforms from red to black. A black so dark and devoid of light it feels like I’m being swallowed into a dark cavern of nothingness.

I scream again as I lose control. The demon within me awakens, and I can’t resist its alluring pull any longer. The alliance is going to die.

Thanks for reading! You can pre-order Crushed at any of these retailers in both eBook and paperback.

After Death Academy-A Super Short Blog Story

I wrote this super short story as the beginning of a project that ended up falling through. I might pick this one up later on when I have time, because Noah was such a fun character to write for such a short period of time, or maybe I’ll just add on to this one in other blog posts when I have the time. I hope you enjoy After Death Academy, a place to go for a second chance at life while taking away someone else’s only chance.

After Death AcademyAfter Death Academy

The last ten seconds of my life, summed up in five words, will be forever etched into the stone placard marking my grave near the tallest palm tree of the Eternal Life Cemetery.

Noah Ryan Thomas

Brave. Selfless. Gone too soon.

The five stupid words are the reason I’m also not enjoying my afterlife, partying it up with all the people who died before me. During those last ten seconds, as I watched the Dodge Ram swerve in the direction I was jumping, I knew I’d get hurt, but I had no idea the force would shoot my soul straight from my body into what I can only describe as an otherworldly dimension that lacked the clouds and pearly gates I assumed awaited me.

But, what people say about dying, you know, with the bright light and harmonious voices—that part was true. Unfortunately, the bright light wasn’t the tunnel to Heaven, but a bare light bulb in a boring white room. As soon as my ears stopped ringing, the voices turned nasally and more annoying than my grandmother trying to sing her favorite song on my little sister’s karaoke machine after spending the evening smoking a pack of cigarettes with Earl, my recently widowed next-door neighbor. Those voices belonged to the After Death Recruiters, who were expecting my arrival.

A woman with white, curly hair, tightened her black robe at her lumpy waist and offered me a sad smile. Without a word, she pointed to the sign hanging on the wall behind her.

We believe in second chances.

Are you brave?

Are you selfless?

Did you die a heroic death?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, the After Death Academy and Grim Reaper Next Life Learning Program is for you.

I remember laughing, staring at the recruiters like someone was playing a serious joke on me. How the heck was I, a sixteen year old junior at Quinn Baker Prep, even remotely qualified for a position I thought to be based on myth?

Looking back at the day of my death, I should’ve asked a few more questions. Instead, I nodded yes, and with a wave of her scythe, the recruiter teleported me into the administration office of After Death Academy, and it’s where I’ve been sitting for days, waiting for someone to tell me what’s going on.

The clock on the wall strikes twelve for the eighth time since my arrival, and a woman in a black robe flies into the waiting room. She looks at her clipboard and then to me.

“Welcome, Noah. Sorry I’ve kept you waiting,” she says. “I’m Ms. Josette, the head mistress of the academy. I’m sure you have a lot of questions.”

I push up from the chair, wobbling on my legs from the lack of sensation. I guess death does that to you. “Am I being punished?”

She tilts her head to the side for a moment before shaking her head. “No, definitely not. You’re being rewarded. Because of you, Gillian Kingston gets to live a long, fulfilling life.”

She’s talking about the kid I pushed out of the street when I saw the truck run the stop sign. I didn’t know who she was, but I was walking home late from school because of the unfair detention Mr. Peters had given me for speaking my mind. All the girl had to do was look up from tying her shoe, and I’d have never been in this mess.

I rock on my heels. “I’m a little confused. Those people—”

“The recruiters,” she says, interrupting.

“Yeah, them. They pointed at a sign about second chances.”

She beams a smile and pulls a stack of papers from her clipboard. “At the After Death Academy, we offer second chances to live again after successfully collecting the souls from your list before someone else does.”

My eyebrows knit together. “Huh? Who?”

She lifts and drops her shoulders. “No need to worry about that now. Everything is in the packet. Read up, Mr. Thomas.”

And with the wave of her scythe, the world shifts, and I disappear.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed the story! Let me know in the comments, and I might just continue on.

Announcing Tainted: A Demon Within Novel!

I’m so excited to reveal the cover of Tainted, the first novel in my new Demon Within series! Tainted will tentatively release in June, 2016. The novel had originally started as a novella that I had never published years ago, and Cami’s story has stayed with me for so long that I just couldn’t ignore her or the Veiled Realm, the demon and creature world nestled secretly within our own human world. So, it turned into a a full length novel and the start of a trilogy.

I hope you look forward to it! If you love young adult paranormal, stories of demons and demon hunters, romance woven throughout, and a hot book boyfriend or two, then Tainted is the perfect novel for you.

And now without further ado…

Tainted by Ginna Moran for web

Seventeen-year-old Cami Anders uses one word to describe her life: Purgatory. What she doesn’t know is she’s closer to Hell than she thinks.

On the run from the demon that killed her parents, Cami struggles to find her place on the fringes of the Veiled Realm, the part of the world where demons and other creatures lurk in the shadows. Striving to find a normal life in the care of a former demon hunter, who would punch even an angel to protect her, is harder than Cami ever imagined. There’s nothing ordinary about sipping holy water like it’s her beverage of choice, having stare-downs with animalistic demons, and relying on a hunter with enough secrets to fill an ocean to keep her soul safe.

When the demon from Cami’s past arrives to collect her soul, which he believes is rightfully his, she must unravel the secrets her protector has spent the last three years keeping from her. She finds herself questioning her existence and learns that running isn’t the answer. The only way to find normalcy is if she fights for it. But is it worth the risk of losing everything, including her soul, in the end?

To celebrate the cover reveal, I’m holding a $10 digital Amazon gift card giveaway. Be sure to enter!

Rough Waters by Nikki Godwin

Rough Waters by Nikki Godwin

What can I say about Rough Waters? It was the perfect sequel to Chasing Forever Down, one of my favorite books. Taking place a year later, the story follows Haley Sullivan back to Crescent Cove to her new Drenaline Surf family, Hooligans, and her attempt at living her forever.

I loved Rough Waters and getting to go back to my favorite beach town, Crescent Cove, to hang out with a group of characters I wish were real. Nikki Godwin does such an excellent job with character development, and I enjoyed how real the relationships—the good and bad—felt between the characters. My favorite interactions were between Haley and her roommates, and I have to warn you, if you read late at night, be careful because my laughter nearly woke up the neighborhood. I also did some yelling and cooing, because I just had so many feelings. I couldn’t put Rough Waters down.

As a California native, I also enjoyed the setting. Crescent Cove reminded me of the beach town I used to live in and stirred a lot of fond memories for me. Nikki’s world building is phenomenal. I wish I could actually live in Crescent Cove. Rough Waters and the rest of the series is a perfect beach read for any time of the year.

There wasn’t anything that I didn’t like about Rough Waters. It was fast-paced, well written, and I can’t wait to read the next book. If you like young adult contemporary novels, beach reads, more real-life like relationships, and an endless supply of hot book boyfriend surfers, you should definitely check out Rough Waters and the rest of the Drenaline Surf series.

Author Interview

1. I love how Haley has A.J., Reed, and Alston as her roommates. If you could choose three roommates from Drenaline Surf, who would they be?

I’d love Haley’s roommates! But if I had to choose, I guess it’d be Colby (because I have a huge weakness for the guy), Enchanted Emily (because she’s based off my sister who does live with me and she’s awesome), and Theo (because I’m a sucker for the broken souls).

2. If Shark were still alive, what advice would he have given Haley the moment she officially moved to Crescent Cove?

“Hang on tight. You’re in for a wild ride.” (As much as I love Shark, I don’t see him being all professional and wise-worded lol)

3. Team Colby or Team Topher?

LOL! Personally, I’m Team Colby, because I adore him. But as far as “for Haley” goes? Not Colby… I can’t say much without spoilers but she does end up with a Brooks brother in the end.

4. Without sharing too many spoilers, what was your favorite scene to write?

My very favorite scene was the conversation between Reed and Haley when you find out Theo’s back story.

5. You mention Haley’s prom with A.J. attending instead of Vin. Can you please add this to the huge list of things you’ll write about? I’d really love to read a scene about this event.

I’ve struggled to come up with short stories for the Drenaline Surf world, so this is an excellent idea! *adds it to her list*

6. What’s your favorite quote from Rough Waters?

There are a few that I really like. I love this one: “There is no amount of alcohol to wash that away. That’s why he breaks. That’s what makes a Hooligan cry.” (which is from my favorite scene) But I also really like this one: “He’s a cracked shell of a dreamer, and I’m sure there’s no beautiful pearl inside.” (which is about Colby)

Thanks so much for taking the time for this interview! I had a lot of fun reading Rough Waters, and I look forward to reading Always Summer, the third book in the Drenaline Surf series.

If you haven’t read any of Nikki’s books, I highly recommend you do. She always sweeps me into a world I don’t want to leave. She also writes a lot of fun crossover stuff that is fun to spot.

Character Bio – Tristan Sparks

Tristan banner

Name: Tristan Sparks

Age: 19

Physical Features: Over six feet, reddish-brown hair, bright green eyes, lanky yet strong.

Style: Jeans and T-shirts, always has some sort of leather bands with elfin charms.

Strengths: Tristan is an elf with a strong grasp of magic. He’s persistent, caring, selfless, and wise beyond his years.

Weaknesses: Overly curious and somewhat of a pushover.

Quote: “While the HPA is powerful, they’re not all powerful. Look how many times they’ve underestimated you, or all the times their skills were faulty, or the times that their own people have turned against them—they’re only human.” This is one of my favorite Tristan quotes because of the truth of his words.

Fun Facts:

  • Tristan’s last name is never actually mentioned in the novel.
  • I had a lot of fun creating what elves are like in my HPA and Creature Council world. Elves happen to be one of the most powerful creatures and can create all sorts of charms and talismans for any situation. It’s why they have one of the few seats on the council.
  • The HPA used elfin blood to formulate the virus to alter human DNA to give people a tracking ability like Evie’s.
  • Tristan has the potential to live hundreds of years if he’s careful.
  • The telling feature of an elf is their pointy ears.

I hope you enjoyed a more in-depth look at one of my favorite book boyfriends, and I hope you enjoy Tristan in Stolen from Me, which you can purchase here.

Eternal Sisters: A Super Short Blog Story

The first unpublished novel I had ever written was a vampire novel. It’ll never, ever see the light of day. While I loved my novel, I cringe trying to read it now. No amount of rewriting could save it. It was THAT bad. But, after writing the novel, I still loved writing vampires and couldn’t get this scene out of my mind. This short story, titled Eternal Sisters, is from 2005. It’s been edited only by me, so please excuse any typos.

Eternal Sisters Short Story Picture small

Eternal Sisters

“Melody?” My sister’s familiar voice echoes through my room.

I close my eyes and cover my ears, lightly humming to myself to push the familiar voice away. After four months, I thought the hallucinations would stop. My doctor says the voices are stress induced and that over time, they will fade. The problem is that they haven’t. It is no longer just her voice that haunts me.

Slowly uncovering my ears, I peek through my eyelashes to see if I’m still imagining things. I search my room and spot my sister perching on my window seat. Her short, cinnamon brown hair curls around her chin and her blue eyes appear a shade lighter than I remember. She grins a toothy smile at me and pats the spot next to her.

“Come on, Melody. You can’t ignore me forever.”

I keep my back facing her and take slow breaths. “This isn’t real. This isn’t real. This isn’t real.” I chant the words like a mantra, like they’ll somehow bring me back to reality.

A peel of laughter screeches from behind me, and the hairs on my arms rise as fear creeps into my heart. If River were really here, I wouldn’t be so afraid of her. My heart wouldn’t threaten to crash through my ribcage, and I’d be so relieved. But she’s not here. This is a living nightmare created by my own mind.

I turn my head and gaze over my shoulder. I freeze as River’s icy stare catches mine, and I find myself unable to look away.

“You are not real,” I say more to myself. I already think I’m crazy. Talking to a hallucination of my sister isn’t helping me hold onto my sanity.

She twitches her index finger. “Don’t be stupid. If I’m not real, how am I here?” She giggles and throws a pillow at me.

Yup. I’m definitely going crazy. There is no way I could’ve possibly felt that pillow. A shudder rushes over me, and I kick the frilly pillow away like it’ll explode any second.

I cover my eyes. “You can’t be real. You’re dead!” I shout and start to hum to myself.

“If you would stop ignoring me, I can explain.” Her voice booms into my ear.

“I was at your funeral. You were buried.” Tears burst from my eyes as I remember the worst moment in my life. It was even more devastating than finding out River had died. I rest my face in the palms of my hands.

“Sorry about that. It had to be done. Trust me. If I could’ve just disappeared, I’d have avoided that annoying inconvenience,” my sister says. She brushes her cool fingers along my arm.

I gasp and pull myself away from her icy touch. “Why are you doing this?”

“Because I’m not dead.”

“But you are dead.”

She laughs, reminding me of all the times we’d laughed together. I wish she wouldn’t now. I can’t stand it. “Okay. I’m a little dead.”

“What does that even mean? You’re a little dead?” I shouldn’t be talking to her. If I keep talking to her, she might never go away.

“Well, I was dead, and now I’m undead.” She giggles.

“That isn’t possible,” I say, covering my ears to help me ignore her.

River pulls my hands away from my ears and yanks me to my feet by my wrists. She lifts me six inches off the floor, and I squirm as her sharp nails dig into my skin. I hold my breath and pray that she’ll stop, and these hallucinations will go away.

But they don’t.

Her smile fades after a moment. “Melody, I want you to come with me.”

“No. Leave me alone.” I kick my legs, trying to touch the carpet below me.

“I can’t. You’re my sister.” The somber tone of my sister’s voice causes me to freeze.

She releases my wrist, and I fall to the floor. I scramble to leave my room, but River appears in front of me. She holds up her hands, palms flat, and pushes me back an inch.

She grips the front of my shirt in her hands. “Don’t make it hard on yourself. Everything will be okay. I promise. Imagine the eternity we’ll get to share.”

My sister lunges at me, and a small scream escapes my lips before she cuts it off with her hand. A flash of her perfect, pointy canines startles me, and my skin burns as she rips open the flesh on my neck.

She pulls away, stopping the burning with her cold fingers.

The reality of the situation is hard to swallow. I preferred thinking I was hallucinating. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that River stands in front of me, alive—well, sort of alive—and that she just bit me.

Writing Stolen from Me Thoughts and Facts

Stolen from me eBook small

With the release of Stolen from Me upon us, I figured I’d share what I loved about the next part of Nate and Mira’s journey as they figure out their place in the creature and Human Preservation Agency world. Good versus evil is a running theme through my novels, and while things have never been clear or black and white, Stolen from Me shines a light on good and evil within a person and how they handle it.

I loved writing Stolen from Me and exploring the darker sides of my characters. With Nate Burnham, the Human Preservation Agency altered him into a killer—or what Dr. Prudence referred to as a “better killer” since he was capable of murder before the HPA brought him in as we saw in the beginning of Altered to Kill with the incubus. Stolen from Me focuses on Nate’s struggle with trying not to kill and learning how to survive in what he thinks is a kill or be killed world.

On the other side of things, Mira Everson has been quite the opposite of Nate. As an enchantress, she’s innately benevolent, and she encourages Nate to be the boy she fell in love with. Unfortunately, she finds herself in a downward spiral as she starts to recognize the real evil in the world. She battles with her humanity and starts to question if it’s worth being good when the bad guys seem to always win. Out of all my characters, Mira has the biggest transformation which you’ll see in the second installment of the Finding Nate series.

SFM Teaser 6

Apart from what I loved exploring with Mira and Nate, I figured I’d share a few more fun facts and tidbits to watch out for while you read.

  1. Stolen from Me was the book that sparked the idea for the Destined for Dreams series. It was written before all three books and stories, and I went back and rewrote Stolen from Me after the fact to tie things into the Destined for Dreams series.
  2. You get to meet one of my favorite characters in Stolen from Me. His name starts with a T, and I’ve considered giving him his own series.
  3. I introduce a creature I’ve never written about before.
  4. Dreams are pretty prominent in all of my books, whether or not there’s a nightmare inflictor involved.
  5. I love the unexpected side effects caused by Nate giving Mira a fresh start in Altered to Kill. The scenes capturing his reactions were interesting to write.
  6. If you’ve read Destined for Dreams, you know the connection Nate shares with the Creature Council. Nate is the last one to know.
  7. Creatures on the west coast tend to be more aggressive because they haven’t had any sort of Creature Council protection until recently.
  8. I’m not able to share my favorite quotes because they contain spoilers.
  9. Some of Evie’s old friends make an appearance.

I hope you look forward to reading Stolen from Me! You can pre-order today or purchase your copy on April 12th!

Halfway There: A Falling from the Sky Short Story by Nikki Godwin

Halfway There is a cute, quick short story that picks up halfway between Falling from the Sky and Crash Landing, a series that follows Ridge McCoy and how he navigates his new relationship with Micah Youngblood, the boy who figuratively brought him back to life after he struggled when his father died in a plane crash.

I loved catching up with Ridge and Micah in Halfway There as they take a short New Year’s vacation to none other than Sierra Springs, which happens to be the setting of Breaking Saint Jude, a book I recently read and loved by Nikki. I loved this! It’s like when two great books meet each other, and you’re reminded how awesome both are. I giggled excitedly with the cameo of Max and Jude (even though they remain anonymous to Ridge and Micah), and now I really, really, want a story to feature all of them. Nikki has a way with crossing over characters naturally, and it’s such a treat to experience.

If you haven’t read any of Nikki’s books yet, you should! She writes such a variety of contemporary YA novels that I feel like there’s something for everyone. LGBT boyXboy, clean romance, surfers and sunshine, and even boy bands and adventurous summers.

I highly recommend you read Falling from the Sky before trying out Halfway There. If you’ve read Falling from the Sky, then what are you waiting for? Also, read Breaking Saint Jude while you’re at it.

Altered to Kill Character Bio: Evie Thompson

Name: Evie Thompson

Age: 17

Physical features: Dark hair cut into a bob, golden skin, hazel eyes, slim/athletic.

Style: Casual wear, jeans, T-shirts, boots, scrubs within the HPA training facility.

Favorite Activities: Shopping, studying, learning about the creature world.

Fears: Making bad decisions, uncertainty, death, fighting against someone she knows.

Strengths: She’s fast and quick thinking, intelligent, careful, a critical thinker.

Weaknesses: Wishy-washy, anxious, regretful, a follower.

Quotes: “I’m just scared. You know, this whole thing wasn’t what I signed up for. The board told me I’d be safe, that I wouldn’t have to worry anymore because I’d be powerful and able to fight. They lied. I’m more scared than ever.” This is one of my favorite Evie lines because it’s one that rings true to her situation. Her realization speaks volumes to the evolution of her character from what role she played in the Destined for Dreams series.

Fun facts:

  • Evie’s name is four letters like Nate, Mira, and Liam. Like Nate, she goes by a nickname instead of her real name, Evangeline.
  • Evie has more secrets and tells more lies than anyone in the series.
  • Evie both loves and hates Nate’s impulsivity.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this in-depth look into Evie!
