Revived Deleted Scene

Miss Cami and Dylan? Here’s a glimpse at a deleted scene from Revived: Demon Within Book 5. It contains spoilers for the series, so read at your own risk. Also, this scene was cut from the very first draft and has not been edited.

REVIVED DELETED SCENE

Fog hovers over the sleepy town of Shadow Meadows as I watch the sun peak over the horizon from my place on the hillside. The world explodes with golden hues, covering everything in ethereal light. Tilting my head back, I soak in the warm rays. Sunrises never get old now that I know what life is like without them. I half expect the daylight prison realm to steal me away at any second, but it doesn’t. Not with Zach’s heavenly light swirling through my soul, anchoring me to this plane.

I cross my legs out in front of me and dig my dirty fingers into the dry grass that hasn’t seen rain in months. Somewhere down below, people are stirring, getting ready to face the world. Jealousy sneaks into my mind, catching me off guard. I’ve never felt so jealous for the oblivious in so long. It’s tempting to knock on everyone’s door and tell them who I am. Maybe I’ll discover something that makes me want to actually save the world.

A soft thud sounds from my right as someone lands nearby, interrupting my peace and quiet. Expecting that Zach would leave me alone for longer than an hour was wishful thinking. He always returns as my ever-present shadow. My protector of sorts. Funny to think that a demon would need an angel’s protection, but I never thought I made a very good demon in the first place.

“I’m starting to think you’re obsessed with me,” I comment, keeping my gaze trained on the small town below. I still want to tear off his head after last night.

The scent of dewy apples catches on the breeze, encompassing me in its familiar scent. “I thought we had already established that, love?”

Heat crawls up my cheeks as embarrassment grabs hold of me. “Oh, hey,” I say without looking at Dylan. “I didn’t know you were in town.”

He plops down next to me and bumps me with his shoulder. “Just got back.”

“How’s Faith?”

“She’s holding up.”

Like most of the demonic world, Faith believes that I sacrificed my life to save Malicevile. Even though she isn’t Hell-bound, she still remains in her demonic father’s care. The less she knows about me, the better. I feel guilty that she had to mourn me, but guilt is nothing new to me. I hope one day, when everything is said and done, I’ll be able to show myself to her again. You say that like you’re still willing to destroy your father…

I push the thought away. “Any other news?”

He shrugs. “Nothing important, and I haven’t seen him if that’s what you’re really wanting to know.”

Him. Dylan refuses to even speak Evan’s name. I don’t know if he thinks it hurts for me to hear it or if he just hates him so much he refuses to acknowledge he even has a name. Either way, it doesn’t matter.

Sighing, I lean back until I’m flat on the ground with a clear view of the crystalline sky. It’s so blue that I feel as if I could get lost in it.

“I miss him,” I say more to myself. I know it’s the last thing Dylan wants to hear, but I don’t care.

He ignores my comment and says, “I heard about the demi-demon.”

“So that’s why you’re here? Zach can’t bother to face me so he sends you in to try to reason with me. It’s not going to work, Dylan. You weren’t there. You didn’t see her. I—”

He cuts me off by pulling me from the ground and into his arms. His arms wrap around me in a hug that suffocates me with his scent despite how gross and crusty my clothes are—not to mention smelly—and rests his chin in the crook of my neck.

I’m too surprised to move, so I keep my hands pressed into his chest, feeling his rhythmic heartbeat under my palms.

“You don’t have to explain yourself. I went to Hell for you, remember? And I wouldn’t expect anything less from you, love. If my soul were bound to Malicevile, I’d hope you would be considerate as to what happened after he died. But Zach and the others? They’ll never understand what it’s like to be in love. I’m just lucky I’m only half angel. I couldn’t imagine life without being able to have experience what I do for you.” He squeezes me a little tighter, like his embrace has the power to stop the battle raging within me.

“You don’t think I’m selfish for dooming the world to Hell?” I ask, breathing into his neck.

He chuckles into my hair. “Of course not, but I also don’t think you’re solely responsible for the state of the world. You’d have to have a pretty extreme complex for that.”

I crinkle my nose, pulling back to stare into Dylan’s chocolate-brown eyes. He grins at me, flashing his dimples, and I reach up and rub his cheek. “You can thank that jerk, Zach, for that. Those were his words.”

Dylan leans forward, brushing his nose against mine for a split second before pushing from the ground with me still in his arms. Usually I’d protest, but the world doesn’t feel so heavy when someone else is holding me.

“Well, I don’t know about you, but I think the world will wait a few hours to combust. Want to grab breakfast?”

“Think we can make a quick stop first?”

“Whatever you want, love.”

With those words, Dylan bends his knees, launching us into the air. I keep my eyes trained on him instead of watching the world disappear below. I’ve had enough of the world. I’m sure it’s had enough of me.

Demon Within Series Cover Re-Vamp Announcement

Over the next few weeks, you’ll notice a change in the covers of the Demon Within series if you haven’t already seen them on Amazon. While the original covers will always have a place in my heart, and I’ll always love their colorful spines, I’m officially in love with the new covers and their portrayal of Cami Anders.

Why re-vamp the covers so soon after the release of Revived you ask (or didn’t ask)? Well, the simple answer is that the decision to change them has been with me since the release of Crushed, though I didn’t want to change the covers halfway through the series. The original covers were often misinterpreted by just looking at them, especially with an older man (who was portraying Malicevile—Cami’s demon), and people assumed he was the love interest, which is obviously not the case. Also, I believe the new covers better portray the YA Paranormal genre. Plus, now, “These covers are on fiiiiiiirrreeeeee!” (Imagine Alicia Keys singing).

Anyway, I hope you all love the new Demon Within series covers as much as I do! If you’re interested in purchasing a signed paperback with the original covers on them for a discounted price, please feel free to message me at Ginna @ GinnaMoran . com (there are no spaces) or shoot me a message here.

Have a great day!

XOXO,

Ginna

United by Heather Young-Nichols

I was thrilled to return to Heather Young-Nichols’ world of Grounded with the second book in the series, United. Picking up where Grounded left off, we jump right into action that leaves you eagerly turning the pages as some jaw-dropping drama unfolds.

I have to say, I loved this book! I just love Alyssum and her spontaneity and snark. I love the relationships she has with others, from her love interest, Jensen to her best friend, Aric, and also newcomer, Sloane. Heather has a way of creating such relatable characters that you can’t help but be engrossed in their lives from start to finish. Without spoiling anything, there’s a particular scene that shocked me, like I was yelling whoa!, and some might hate it, but I love drama and angst and being left with my mouth agape.

The unique premise of a war between Gremalians (gremlins) and Gobel (goblins) is an unexpected treat for those who like paranormal since books about these types of creatures are a rarity. I highly recommend United for those who enjoy sarcastic, witty female leads and a fresh take on paranormal stories.

I was fortunate to be able to interview Heather about the Grounded series. I do hope you enjoy the interview!

***

1. Would you rather be Gremalian or Gobel? Hmmmm…I think Gremalian but that may be because I’ve spent more time in their world than the Gobel world. But also the Gremalian were more accepting of a human in their world than I think the Gobel would be so, to me, that means they are more open.

2. Jensen or Aric? Gah! What a choice. I’m going to go with Jensen. Possibly because I picture Zac Efron when I wrote both of these stories but also, he’s just my kind of guy. Aric is great but it’s Jensen for me.

3. Who is your favorite Bramble brother? Stone. He made me laugh so much, even in scenes that didn’t end up in the book. For me Stone is that perfect combination of funny and serious where the other brothers are either too serious (Kale) or too laid back (Lake).

4. Describe Alyssum in three words. Stubborn, brave, growing

5. What was your favorite scene to write in United? I have 2. The first is when Alyssum is rescued by Sloane because I had no idea that someone was going to rescue her until I wrote it and I really didn’t know it was going to be a human who would become important. The other is when the group tries to teach Sloane to use a Taser. I’m not sure why that was so fun for me but I giggled when she had a much easier time trying to shoot Jensen with it than she did Aric. I think it told me exactly what was developing between the two.

6. Who do you think would protect you better? Jensen, Aric, or Alyssum? Aric. No question. Jensen focuses on trying to do what’s right which is why he didn’t go with Alyssum at the end of Grounded. He thought she wouldn’t go without him, which of course he was wrong, but that wasn’t protecting her. Alyssum is too spontaneous. She doesn’t think things through and sometimes gets people hurt. But Aric…whether he agrees with you or not he is going to be there to protect you or die trying.

7. What should readers know about the Grounded series? It started as a joke. A friend and I had just read a great book that featured creatures not really represented in books. As a joke I told her I was going to write a book about Gremlins and Goblins. We laughed and laughed then grew quiet. More seriously I said, “I’m going to write a book about Gremlins and Goblins.” By the end of the afternoon Grounded was plotted out as much as I plot anything.

8. Do you write with or without music? Unfortunately without. If I do have music playing it has to be instrumental because otherwise I spend my time singing the songs instead of writing.

9. When do you write? I write whenever I can. I have time set aside to do it but if the opportunity arises at a time I didn’t plan, I just go with it.

10. What’s next on your publishing calendar? It looks like a NA contemporary romance will be next. After the summer romance anthology I’m a part of for charity.

Special thanks to Heather for this interview!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Heather Young-Nichols has been writing since she was little. After a life hiatus from all things fun, she returned in full force and hasn’t stopped since. It’s unusual to find her without her computer, a book or her kindle unless she’s spending time with her family. And the real fun comes out during baseball season. Then, all bets are off. Heather grew up in Saginaw, Michigan and graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with a degree in Sociology. Although she’s currently living in the country, she’s always been more of a city girl.

Scorned Excerpt

I’m ecstatic to announce the release of Scorned, the fourth book in the Demon Within series. Scorned is my favorite thus far because of the shift that takes place in Cami’s life and world. I loved exploring all her different relationships–both the good ones and bad ones–and how they affected her on different levels.

With every release, I usually share the prologue, but I’ve decided to share an excerpt from the first chapter instead. I’ve edited out most spoilers, but I have to warn you, if you haven’t read any of the other books, you may still stumble across some.

I hope you enjoy!

Fire glows in Malicevile’s eyes as he directs his anger at me. Raising his hands, he blasts me with a surge of white-hot energy. I don’t have time to react. His power knocks me back into the wall, sending sparks through my vision.

I grind my teeth while he shoots more power at me until I focus enough to absorb it. My hair rises around my face as static clings to me. My soul fills, expanding to the point that I’m pretty sure I’ll combust if he continues, but I won’t give him the satisfaction of asking for mercy.

Standing over me, he smiles. “Had enough?”

Kicking my leg out, I knock his feet out from under him, stopping him from blasting me with another wave of power. If he expects anything less of me, then he doesn’t know me as well as I thought he did.

I levitate from my spot on the floor and land just next to him. “Have you?”

He laughs as his eyes narrow. Without answering me, he handsprings to his feet and removes his suit jacket. It gives me the chance to ready myself for his next move. As he rolls up his sleeves, I shrug from my leather jacket and toss it to Evan.

I roll my shoulders, stepping backwards, not touching the floor as I levitate high enough to be at the same level as Malicevile. He cracks his knuckles like he can somehow intimidate me. It works a little.

Power ignites in his fingers, and it doesn’t take him long to thrust an energy orb at me. As I catch it, he charges forward, slamming his hands into my chest, pushing me back into the wall. His sharp nails dig into my collarbone, stabbing into my skin.

Jerking my leg up, I knee him in the stomach. He doesn’t back down though. He never does. I could fight him all I want, but he only reacts like I’m a pesky fly.

“You’re boring me, Camilla,” he says, sending another bout of energy into me.

I don’t respond. I can’t. His energy comes in faster and hotter than usual. It sinks deep into my soul, threatening to consume me. He’s testing me, making a point. Showing me that I’m nothing. It’ll take me years to ever measure up to him.

“Have you had enough?” he asks again, smiling at my obvious pain.

“No,” I manage to spit out.

“Good.” He drops his hands and steps back to give me a chance to try to best him again. “Now stop thinking and just react.”

Without waiting for him to strike first, I shoot a fireball from my hands instead of the energy he expects. The fire singes the fabric, smoldering his dress shirt. There’s no point in trying to use his power against him.

As he pats the burning fabric with his hand, I rush forward. Another fireball erupts in my fingers, and I chuck it at him again. He’s prepared this time though and drops to the ground before propelling from the floor to knock into me. His arms circle my waist, and he flips me up and over his shoulder. He spins me through the air and launches another bout of energy at me.

I can’t absorb the power and stop my fall at the same time, so when my back hits the hardwood floor of his office, air bursts from my lungs. I skid across the floor, hitting my back on the door. It shakes on its hinges from my force but doesn’t crack like the last time I egged my father on.

I shift, peering at Evan’s boots as he stands over me. Glancing up, I meet his serious eyes. His jaw tenses, and we watch each other for a split second. It’s long enough for Malicevile to shock me again.

I scream out in frustration and thrust my hands out, sending the power I’ve been saving for a special occasion. The lava bomb flies through the air and hits Malicevile in the stomach. Surprise crosses his face, and he rips his shirt off before the acid-like power melts into his skin. He wasn’t quick enough though. His abs glow bright pink.

“Get up, Cami,” Evan whispers.

Malicevile’s already crossing the room before I have a chance to get to my feet. Fire burns in his eyes as he closes the distance. Energy swirls in his hands, and he comes at me with furrowed brows, a look of revenge on his face.

I raise my hands. “I’ve had enough.”

He hovers over me. “I’ll tell you when you’ve had enough.” With those words, he sends a stream of electricity straight into my chest.

The edges of my vision darken as exhaustion consumes me. He hasn’t pushed me like this in weeks. I’m pretty sure I’m being punished.

An angry tear escapes my eye. “Stop!”

“Make me,” Malicevile says with a smile.

But I can’t. All I can do is succumb to the darkness that drags me away from the world.

Music Inspiration for Haunted

Every book writing experience differs for me. Sometimes, I write in silence and edit with music. Other times, I write with music and edit in silence. And more often than not, I write and edit with music. The Demon Within series has had a lot of musical influences, but mostly for the characters. I’ve narrowed down my playlist for Haunted to my top 5 favorite songs if you’re interested in listening.

  1. Demons by Imagine Dragons

Demons was a huge inspiration for Cami’s character in Haunted. She has lived for months with this notion that she is somehow evil because of her birthright, and all she wants to do is protect those she cares for. Demons captures her struggle through the entire series.

Favorite lines:

They say it’s what you make
I say it’s up to fate
It’s woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save their light
I can’t escape this now
Unless you show me how

  1. Anthem of the Angels by Breaking Benjamin

Anthem of the Angels perfectly captures Dylan’s feelings for Cami in Haunted. He wants nothing more than to see her pull through her inner struggles, and his devotion to her surpasses all reason.

Favorite lines:

Days go on forever,
But I have not left your side.
We can chase the dark together,
If you go then so will I.

There is nothing left of you,
I can see it in your eyes.
Sing the anthem of the angels,
And say the last goodbye.

  1. Haunted by Taylor Swift

Haunted is the namesake of the novel and captures Cami’s feelings on an emotional level. She feels like she’s drowning in everything wrong in her life, and all she wants is to fight and save those she can.

Favorite lines:

Stood there and watched you walk away
From everything we had
But I still mean every word I said to you
He will try to take away my pain
And he just might make me smile
But the whole time I’m wishing he was you instead

  1. Angels Fall by Breaking Benjamin

Angels Fall sums up Cami’s relationship with Evan in Haunted. Evan, like Dylan, plays a huge role in Cami’s life. Every relationship molds Cami into who she is, but with Evan, it reminds her of how unfair life can be.

Favorite lines:

Gray skies will chase the light away
No longer
I fought the fight now only dark remains
Forever
Divided I will stand
And I will let this end

When angels fall with broken wings
I can’t give up, I can’t give in
When all is lost and daylight ends
I’ll carry you and we will live forever, forever

The sun begins to rise
And wash away the sky
The turning of the tide
Don’t leave it all behind
And I will never say goodbye

  1. Ungodly Hour by The Fray

Ungodly Hour captures the anguish and hope Cami drowns in through Haunted. Just when she feels certain about her life, everything changes and forces her to realize that the only thing she can be certain in life is who she is.

Favorite lines:

And I am short on words knowing what’s occurred
And she begins to leave because of me

Her bag is now much heavier
I wish that I could carry her
But this is our ungodly hour
Ungodly hour
Ungodly hour

Haunted: Demon Within Book 3

I’m ridiculously excited to share with you the cover of the third book in the Demon Within series: Haunted. Haunted follows Cami Anders as her world is turned upside down and scattered around like the ashes left in her demon’s wake. It’s my favorite in the series thus far, and I hope you look forward to it as much as I do.

And now for the cover and blurb.

haunted-new-idea-cover-small

After a devastating sacrifice leaves seventeen-year-old Cami Anders’ life in ruins, she must figure out how to pick up the pieces of her world and carry on with her second chance at life. But moving on isn’t so easy when the past comes back to haunt her, sending her running again—except this time, demons aren’t chasing her.

Determined to make a fresh start, Cami and her friends turn away from demon hunting to help those affected by demons and unprotected by the Hunter’s Alliance. As Cami immerses herself deeper into the Veiled Realm, new revelations have her questioning her entire existence. She finds safety with those she once feared—all while trying to make a difference in a world that no longer feels so wrong.

Love Triangles

#TeamDemonBoy, #TeamAngelBoy, or #TeamCami?

love-trianglesWith the release of Tainted, I’ve had a few people comment on the relationships in Cami’s life. One thing’s for sure—people either love or hate love triangles. If you hate love triangles, I want to let you know now that while there is a love triangle in the series, it’s not what the books are about. The main focus of the series is self-discovery, exploring the gray areas of good and evil, overcoming adversity, fighting for what is important on a personal level, and much more.

Every relationship in Cami’s life is important. They’re not there just to add angst and drama. They serve purposes that might not be clear from the start, because Cami’s world is still full of secrets, lies, and misunderstandings. It’s the relationships that Cami has with others that drive her through her life. From her relationship with her guardian to the relationship with (spoilers ahead) her demonic father, it’s these relationships that help her discover who she is and what she wants/needs to do in her life.

The thing about Cami’s relationship with both Evan and Dylan is that while both boys hold a piece of Cami’s heart, they’re so completely different and special in their own way. And like everything, her relationship with both boys is ever evolving and changing like her whole life. It’s not about who she loves or who she should/wants to be with, it’s about how these specific relationships affect her life. In Tainted, it’s the beginning—everything is new. But in Crushed, things have had time to settle and you get to see the layers unfold. But why a love triangle, you ask? I don’t have a clear cut answer. Cami is young and as things progress and change, so does Cami. You’ll just have to wait and see how things unfold. In the Demon Within series, anything is possible.

Crushed Excerpt

Now with Crushed released in the world, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite non-spoiler scenes featuring Cami, Cadence, and Evan. The Hunter’s Academy is where hunters go to train in slaying demons, and let’s just say, it’s not your ordinary school. Happy reading!

img_5292“If you two will stand up here, I’d love to demonstrate how to get to know your opponents without any fighting demonstrations,” Hunter Miller says.

Cadence saunters to the front of the room, and Evan casually strolls behind her. Like me, Cadence is in a black dress with combat boots. I’d never have worn this dress to class if I’d been able to change. But Cadence is a different story. She is the fashionista of the hunters and can fight in anything, which is an advantage in my book. Her dark purple hair is braided down her back, with a faux black flower pinned behind her ear. Her honey brown eyes shine bright against the dark contrast of her heavy eyeliner. I bet half the boys in the room have already fantasized about kissing her plum lips.

Evan wears a simple button-down shirt and jeans. His blond hair is neatly brushed out of his aqua eyes. He looks absolutely normal. But behind his eyes and easygoing smile lies a predator most don’t know exists. He’s lethal, strong, and a great fighter. I’m excited to see if the class’s observations about my best friends are correct.

Hunter Miller holds a marker in her hand, ready to write on the whiteboard. “I want everyone to imagine the classroom is an alley in the middle of Los Angeles. It’s dark and you’re alone. At the end of the alley, Hunter Dubois is blocking your path. She’s demon-tainted, and the only way past her is to fight. How do you fight what you’re unsure of? Let’s start with clothing. What does Hunter Dubois’s clothing say about her combat skills?”

A boy with a shaved head raises his hand. I should really learn people’s names if I’m going to fit in. “Yes, Sebastian,” Hunter Miller says.

“Her dress says one of two things. She’s either a demi-demon with the ability to heal quickly, or she is stupid and a terrible fighter.”

Cadence smirks, raising a single eyebrow. Nothing anyone says will get to her. Hunter Miller writes a less offensive description on the board.

“Her combat boots lead me to believe she’s a great kicker,” a red headed girl says.

“Her entire ensemble confuses me,” a boy, whose name I think is Adam, says. “She’s hot and scary. I don’t know what to expect.”

I laugh out loud. Adam shrugs his shoulders, unfazed.

“This is good,” Hunter Miller says. “We all know looks can be deceiving. “Now, Hunter Dubois, can you explain to the class why you have chosen to wear a dress instead of more appropriate hunting attire?”

“Sure. I like to look good while I destroy demons. Just because I’m a hunter, doesn’t mean I have to be a fashion victim. I can fight wearing anything. I’m that good.”

Crushed: Demon Within Book Two Prologue

crushed-teaser8In only two short days, Crushed releases into the world! The second book in the series was so much fun to write because I got to explore a few characters that we just glimpsed in Tainted. It’s definitely a rollercoaster ride of a book as Cami finds herself amid a world where she doesn’t know who to trust as secrets of her life come to light. If you like young adult stories that explore the areas between good and evil, characters with special abilities, hot book boyfriends, mystery, and the possibility of some intense feelings, you’ll love Crushed.

To celebrate the soon-to-be release of Crushed, I’ve included the prologue for your reading enjoyment. I hope you love the book as much as I loved writing it!

And now without further ado…

prologue

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
A CRIMSON HAZE shadows my vision as anger rages through me like a fire threatening to burn everything around me to ashes. The bitter, dangerous emotion consuming me keeps me moving forward. It’s the only thing that encourages me to succeed in the one thing I want most in life—the destruction of those who’ve betrayed me by my hands.

I wasn’t always like this. I didn’t always have this overwhelming hunger for death, for devastation. But then everything changed. Everything always changes. My demonic side started controlling me worse than the man who raised me. My father’s obsession with who I should be transformed me from a weak, fragile girl into a blood-thirsty demi-demon. And now it dominates me, controls me. By accepting my heritage as a half-demon, I’ve inherited the evil that comes with it—the evil that forces me to take deep breaths to stay in control.

The evil burns in a good way, my overwhelming power sizzling under my skin. The faces of the Hunter’s Alliance blur as my desire to obliterate them overtakes my soul.

“Calm down,” a surly voice begs. “You’ll only hurt yourself.”

The skin on my wrists stings as I yank at the wired rope binding my hands to the rickety metal chair. My knotted hair falls in my eyes. A scream burns in my throat. I need to get out of here before they discover I’ve lost control of my demon half—before they try to send my soul to where it belongs.

“You have to let me go before it’s too late.” My voice comes out as a whisper like the quiet before a storm. A thundering, demonic storm I know is bound to happen if I can’t force my demonic half to relax.

Icy fear slithers through my veins. No one can save me. I can’t even protect myself. My humanity slowly slips through my fingers. I won’t let the alliance do this to me. I trusted them, helped them, and just like my dad said, they’ve turned their backs on me.

My vision transforms from red to black. A black so dark and devoid of light it feels like I’m being swallowed into a dark cavern of nothingness.

I scream again as I lose control. The demon within me awakens, and I can’t resist its alluring pull any longer. The alliance is going to die.

Thanks for reading! You can pre-order Crushed at any of these retailers in both eBook and paperback.

Malicevile Hellshire Quote TaintedQuote: “The girl has spunk. All these years I thought I’d have to toughen her up.” I loved writing Malicevile’s character. He’s much more than just an evil demon, and it was fun to come up with his motives.

Theme song: Had Enough by Breaking Benjamin

Fun facts: Malicevile could easily capture Cami, but he enjoys tormenting and wearing her down. All of his actions are heavily planned, and they all have a reason behind them.

Also, Malicevile’s last name is never mentioned in Tainted.
